As you may know, Shailene Woodley (Tris) and Miles Teller (Peter) have worked together before. They co-starred a film called “The Spectacular Now“, which first premiered at Sundance Film Festival and is set for theater release next month. Some of our staff members were given an opportunity to attend an early screening of the film, to see the connection between these two Divergent cast members. While it might have been strange to see a love story between “Tris” and “Peter”, it was quickly forgotten when I stepped into the story of “Aimee” and “Sutter”.

The Spectacular Now was extremely realistic in ways I had not expected. It took a step away from the literary cliches I have come to see in story lines and surprised me at every end. The events I expected to see lead to drama did not, but drama appeared where I was not expecting, instead. Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 4.17.42 PMMiles Teller’s character, Sutter Keely, was not the typical male protagonist. He certainly did not always have good intentions and he had plenty of reasons for the audience not to like him. He was just honest enough, however, that the audience had hope that he would make the right choices and leave the wrong ones behind. Shailene Woodley’s Aimee Finicky was a far more sympathetic character, who seemed to think the best of everyone and trust without hesitation.

Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 4.18.10 PMThe audience rooted for her happiness, in any form that it might come. Teller and Woodley might not have had the instantaneous connection Hollywood has grown accustomed to seeing on the screen, but they made for an extremely realistic experience of attraction, confusion, love, and heartbreak.

As a huge Hunger Games fan, it was also wonderful to see Dayo Okeniyi (Thresh) have such a prominent role in the film. Overall, it was a fantastic film. I would recommend audiences that do not know the story to walk in without expectations for what they assume will happen, because all of mine were quickly proven wrong. But that’s “real life”.

So, do you think you’re going to see the film? Are you excited to see two Divergent stars in action, even with a greatly differing storyline? Let us know what you think in the comments!
